Peak Solutions is a veteran-owned business providing mission-critical tool kits and more to the military, state and federal agencies, as well as industrial buyers. They source and distribute tools to tactical equipment, from standard GMTK (General Mechanic’s Tool Kit) to customized solutions for Special Operations teams. As a retired Marine, Peak Solutions founder Bill Gorman knows how important it is to have the right equipment at hand – no matter where you are in the world.
Peak Solutions won a major deal to supply GMTK to deployed military teams in Germany, but the job came with an incredibly tight timeline. There’s a tight-knit industry built around fulfilling military contracts; one misstep and your company’s reputation is in jeopardy. So, Peak Solutions reached out to The Upstart Group to help facilitate filling the order.
Peak Solutions knew exactly what was needed; The Upstart Group knew how
to make it happen. With deep connections in the industrial supply channel, The Upstart Group had the network and relationships necessary to turn this project around quickly. They helped source the product to Peak Solutions’ standards, coordinate pack and ship, and ensured the shipment reached Germany in days.
Upstart founder Rohan Thambrahalli said, “Working with Peak Solutions on this demanding project allowed the Upstart Group to live our core business values: do things faster, do them better, and more cost-effectively than anyone else can do themselves. All three came into play in this situation to help Peak Solutions fulfill their bid.”
“Rohan and his team at The Upstart Group provided key infrastructure aspects without adding any cost. We couldn’t have pulled this off without them.”Bill Gorman, CEO, Peak Solutions
Fulfilling the military’s GMTK order in just a few days was only the beginning of what promises to be a fruitful relationship between Peak Solutions and The Upstart Group.
With guidance from The Upstart Group, Bill now sees the opportunity to grow beyond his current customer base and supplier network. One of the biggest opportunities in front of Peak Solutions is the “Amazon Amendment,” part of a 2017 appropriations bill, directing federal agencies to source products through a “company that operates online portals,” most notably, Amazon.com.
With federal procurement spending approaching $500 billion annually, this is an important market for most any company, but in particular for a veteran-owned business such as Peak Solutions. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy 2017 report on military business owners, 9.1 percent of all U.S. businesses are majority-owned by veterans.
Amazon gives government purchasing agents the ability to specify criteria when searching for vendors – such as service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses (SDVOSB) like Peak Solutions. In turn, suppliers are able to designate specific pricing visible only to government procurement buyers. Many government procurement contracts mandate a percentage of business go to these kinds of suppliers (for example, Public Law 106-50 established a contracting goal for Federal agencies to award 3% of prime contracts to SDVOSBs). In addition, many large prime contractors have SDVOSB subcontracting goals, and Amazon allows these buyers and suppliers to quickly connect.
The Upstart Group was able to help Peak Solutions navigate the intricacies of selling and sourcing on the Amazon platform, while showing them the potential for future market growth by taking advantage of the Amazon Amendment.
“They educated me on the advantage of selling on Amazon, even though I’m focused in the B2B market. Instead of reaching 300 people, I’m reaching 300,000+. It gives me the capability to tap into a much broader marketplace. They really act like a partner – they realize my success is their success. We can do some great things together.”Bill Gorman
